Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein Has it All...
Great taste, excellent pricing, and quality. You name it!
If you've read some other protein articles on the site here,
you'll see that I think highly of Optimum's 100% whey protein.
I've been a long time user of Optimum 100% whey protein, and have
been very happy with it. Of the top of my head, I can think
of handfuls of people who are also pleased with this protein
supplement as well!
Strangely enough, despite how long I've been using 100
Whey and how much I enjoy it, I've never done a review on
it. At the same time, Optimum Nutrition reformulated their
100whey sometime back to make it even better, so I decided
to get off my lazy butt and do a review on it.
Yes, you read it correct, Optimum reformulated their 100%
whey protein which was already top notch for price and quality
considerations, and now, they've even made it better!
So what's changed? Here's some key changes:
- The addition of Hydrolyzed whey peptides
- Each 29.4g scoop contains 1 more gram of protein (now at 23g
instead of 22g)
- 100% Whey is now "instantized"
- A new product look

So, what are hydrolyzed whey peptides, and how does it
make the new Optimum 100% Whey better? Hydrolyzed whey is a whey
protein isolate that have had some of it amino acid peptides
broken into shorter chains of amino acids, which leads to
improved absorption in the stomach. However, the hydrolysis
process makes this form of whey taste bitter, and also increased
the cost.
However, this new addition of Hydrolyzed whey is likely
to be in a low percentage of the proteins present for those
2 very reasons:
1) more hydrolyzed whey will taste bitter,
2) increased production costs. Unfortunately, we'll never
know what percentages of each of the proteins present are,
since manufacturers aren't required to disclose that information.
Look on the bright side, having some is better than none.
From the sounds of it, the new Optimum 100% Whey Protein should
taste worse, and should go up in pricing! But wait... It
didn't! The new 100% whey still tastes fantastic like before,
and its still the same low price as before. Optimum Nutrition
comes through for the average joes once again with a top
notch product. I'm not a big fan of any strawberry flavors,
but I really enjoy the vanilla and chocolate flavors.
I'd give it a 9.75 out of 10 on taste.
Serious athletes and health-conscious consumers know that 100%
Whey Gold Standard™ represents the gold standard protein supplement
for anyone who’s serious about health and fitness
Even better yet, you're now getting 1g extra of protein
per 29.4g serving scoop! For an 80 serving, 5lb tub, that's
an extra 80g of higher quality whey at no extra cost. I
sound like an infomercial, don't I?
Finally, what does "Instantized" Whey powder mean?
Well, before, the previous formula was already very easy
to mix. Throw it in a shaker, and there isn't any clumps
or residues like many other powders. Now, Optimum Nutrition
has taken it even a step further to make it "spoon
mixing" friendly. That's right, for lazy folks like
myself, sometimes I get too lazy to wash the "Magic Bullet"
mixer after use, I just add the whey to water (or milk)
and mix with a spoon - and there is no clumping either!
Just follow the instructions on the tub, and you'll have
a nice smooth tasting shake every time.
I have tried 3 or 4 of the leading Whey Proteins only to find they
don't taste good. So the other day I opened up a jug of Optimum
Nutrition's Whey Protein Vanilla Ice Cream and it's # 1 in my book.
The ingredients are great, the taste is great and it's very easy to
mix or shake.
You get 23 grams of protein in every scoop and there is 3 grams or
more of glutamine. Plus you have the other amino acids all in a one
shake that goes done easy. I will continue to use this product and
try some other ones from Optimum Nutrition.
Oh yeah, did I mention that 100% Whey is inexpensive? Order
online, and you can get a 5lb tub (80 servings) for only
$30 or a 10lb bag (160 servings) for only $60. Either way,
you're getting a top notch protein supplement for a great
price.
